Cecilian Singers, Drogheda, a mixed-voice choir, was founded in 1982 as a concert choir. Initially choir members were from St. Mary's/Ballsgrove parish areas, but gradually members joined from other areas. The first musical director was the late Mrs. Daisy Comyn.
The choir performed annually in St. Mary's Boys' School Hall and at other venues. The repertoire of these concerts was comprised of choral numbers and songs from well-known musicals. Proceeds were donated to charity.
In the late 1980's, the choir decided to compete at choral festivals. Under the musical directorship of Paul Brennan (Drogheda), Edward Holly, Ann Grennan and Paul Brennan (Dundalk), the choir has been successful at various choral festivals - notably, Navan, Dundalk, Dublin and Sligo. The choir's most marked success was in 1995 when they won the North Wales International Choral Festival, Mixed Voice Competition.
The Cecilian Singers now also sing on occasion in churches around Drogheda and Dundalk.
The choir rehearses each Wednesday at 8:00pm in Our Lady's College, Greenhills, Drogheda. New members are always welcome.
